Print off a copy of the above plan and use your printer or a photocopier to reduce or enlarge the plan so that the black "scale line" is 100 milimeters (mm) or 3.93 inches long. This will make the plan at the correct scale of 1 to 100.

Here are a few things to consider when you are designing your own floor plan.

  • Keep internal walls perpendicular (at right angles) to the external walls. This will reduce tight unuseable corners.

  • If you are planning on walls which will be under the cupola; will they go all the way to the ceiling or be short partition walls?

  • The kitchen is the room we usually inhabit first thing in the morning. If it is positioned on the eastern side of the Yurt this ensures good solar penetration especially in the winter months.

  • Equally, the main living dining area is best facing north (in the southern hemisphere) and south (in the northern hemisphere). If you have a view in another direction you have to work around it.

  • If you are thinking about building in stages; think about what rooms you plan to build later and how they will connect to the rooms you are planning to build first.

  • Ensure all rooms have vents (windows or vents) at the hightest point in any room to aid good circulation of air in the Yurt.
